Finance
Stanford is committed to providing all undergraduates the opportunity to study away with BOSP, regardless of financial circumstances. Therefore, no matter where you choose to study, your overseas study fee remains the same. There is no direct correlation with your stipend. However, the allowance you receive is directly based on the cost of living in the country of your study abroad.
Read below for a list of questions on your stipend. If you do not find the answer to your question below, or if anything is not clear, please reach out to Sofia Narvaez-Gete, Stanford in Paris Finance Administrator.
Finance Q&A
Stanford is committed to providing all undergraduates the opportunity to study away with BOSP, regardless of financial circumstances. As a result, the Paris program will provide you a stipend to cover some of your living expenses during your quarter.
The stipend you receive in your student account covers:
- For students in the homestays, it covers the meals that are not provided by your host family. As a reminder, breakfast and 5 dinners per week are provided by your host family. Therefore, the stipend covers the remaining 7 lunches and 2 dinners per week.
- For students in the student residence, it covers all meals for every program day.
- Transportation: Taxi to and from the airport and taxis taken from Bing events that end late.
- Your Bing activities co-payments (5 euros per cultural event and 25 euros for the Bing trip).
On site, you'll also receive:
- A Paris metro transportation card (passe Navigo) to cover your everyday transportation in and around Paris.
- A Louvre Jeune card that allows you unlimited access to the Louvre during your stay.
The stipend doesn't cover:
- Academic costs such as library fees and approved class field trip expenses are not part of the stipend, but are reimbursable upon receipt provided to Sofia.
- Missed meals at your host families: no refunds will be given for missed meals.
- Copying and printing is free at the Center but no refunds will be provided for copying and printing costs done outside of the Center.
- Books are at your charge but at least one copy of class books is available at the Center library.
- Medical expenses. You should keep all receipts for medical expenses to provide to your health insurance or see Crisis24 Horizon for more information.
- Personal expenses.
The stipend amount is based on the following calculation:
Students living in homestays or dorms receive the following as part of their stipend:
Taxi allowance (arrival to the program and late return from Bing events) = 180,00 €
The Bing events co-payments are deducted from the stipend, as follows:
Bing cultural events student contribution: 5 euros / event = -10,00 €
Bing trip student contribution: 25 euros per trip = -25,00 €
Students at homestays receive 15€ per program weekday and 30€ per program weekend day. The homestay will provide 5 dinners a week and breakfasts 7 days a week.
Students at dorms will receive 35€ per program day.
Live out students can read below to find out what their stipend covers.
This anticipated amount can be adjusted during the quarter to take into account changes that may occur. For example, if you do not attend a cultural event, the required co-payment will be refunded to you, provided that you reach out before the deadline given for each event. However, note that if you do not show up for a Bing event without prior notice, the full cost of the event will be deducted from your stipend.
You'll receive your stipend prior to the quarter starting.
In order to receive the funds to cover your meal expenses, the University will be crediting your student account. BOSP on the home campus have asked us to remind you that to receive these funds, you must have "Direct deposit" set up. If you have not already done so, you can find instructions here on how to do so. Please set this up as soon as possible. If you have any further questions relating to this please contact Student Services or the BOSP office in Suite Hall.
Finally, in order to access the funds whilst in France, you will need to ensure you have a bank card that works internationally. There are many products on the market, and it would be worth you researching to see what would be the best option for you individually.
As a live-out student, you will be receiving a meal stipend for lunches Monday through Friday, a well-being contribution, a taxi allowance and a transportation card. Breakfasts, dinners, and weekend meals are on your own.
Academic costs such as library fees and approved class field trips will be reimbursed to you upon receipt. You are also subject to the co-pay for Bing events and trips.
Reach out to Audrey Calefas-Strebelle, the Stanford in Paris Director. The Center can provide emergency cash loans or waive the Bing co-payments. We strongly encourage you to contact Financial Aid for assistance as well.
YES you can! Please take a peek at this link with spots near the Stanford in Paris Center to eat within the stipend budget and a Google Map of addresses compiled by previous students.
Based on your living situation, you'll be receiving 15 euros per lunch or dinner. Don't hesitate to ask Sofia if you need help planning a budget for the quarter.
